1999 - ONE DAY CROSSING
Joan Stein's powerful debut, "One Day Crossing"
(1999, 25 min), was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Live-Action
Short category. Called "a remarkable achievement" by the
National Board of Review, the film tells the story of a Hungarian
family struggling to survive the Holocaust. A native New Yorker,
the 40-year-old filmmaker and mother of one began working in film
as a producing intern on Woody Allen's "Deconstructing Harry,"
and has a number of other film and stage credits. Her first Madstone
project is a poignant story of reconciliation, forgiveness and the
family secrets that affect an immigrant grandfather and his wayward
granddaughter. |
